Carletonville Hospital is now facing operational challenges due to the worsening water supply crisis affecting the Merafong region.

According to the hospital’s communication officer, Matabo Letsoalo, the facility’s CEO, Josias Naidoo, and the hospital’s infrastructure manager conducted a site inspection on July 28 alongside officials from the Merafong City Local Municipality. The goal was to assess firsthand how ongoing Rand Water supply disruptions are impacting hospital operations.

“As with all residents of Merafong, the hospital is significantly affected by the ongoing, unannounced water supply disruptions. These interruptions not only compromise the daily water availability required to maintain essential healthcare services but also result in recurring infrastructure strain,” Letsoalo explained. “The hospital’s water pumps and systems are not engineered to withstand such frequent outages, leading to ongoing technical challenges and potential damage.”

The visit also included constructive discussions between hospital leadership and municipal representatives, focusing on long-term, sustainable solutions to ensure reliable water access for the healthcare facility.

Despite the difficulties, the hospital remains committed to delivering uninterrupted, high-quality care to the community. Letsoalo appealed for residents’ continued understanding and support during this time of crisis.

“It is important to note that Carletonville Hospital does not currently have access to an alternative water source and is therefore equally impacted by these service interruptions as the broader Merafong community,” she said.

The hospital’s management team is working closely with all relevant stakeholders to mitigate the effects of the water outages and to explore contingency measures to maintain service delivery.
