Mondeor crash kills two

Unfortunately one of the young men, who was a passenger in the car, died on scene, and the other critically injured man and pedestrian were taken to Baragwanath Hospital for emergency treatment. The driver of the vehicle passed away early on Tuesday morning.

ONE young man was declared dead at an accident scene, another died later in hospital and a pedestrian was injured, after a horrific accident on Monday, January 23 at about 14:00.

The driver of the vehicle, which was travelling down Columbine Avenue, Mondeor from the Southgate side, apparently lost control of the car – causing it to veer off the road, hitting a pedestrian who was walking on the pavement, before smashing into a tree.

ER24 paramedics arriving on the scene removed the two young men from the vehicle and began emergency treatment, giving them advanced life support intervention. The pedestrian was also assessed; he’d sustained moderate injuries.

Unfortunately one of the young men, who was the passenger in the car, died on the scene. The other critically injured man and pedestrian were taken to Baragwanath Hospital for emergency treatment. The driver of the vehicle passed away early on Tuesday morning.

“ER24 paramedics worked tirelessly to save the young man who died on scene, stabilising the other before he was taken to hospital,” said Michelle Pelser from Mondeor Sector One Community Policing Forum, who was one of the first people on the scene.

Also in attendance were Metro Police officers, who assisted with traffic calming measures on Columbine, while the accident scene was cleared.

“My sincere condolences to the families of the deceased young men,” added Pelser. One of the deceased was laid to rest on Tuesday morning, January 24.

Local authorities will be conducting an investigation into the collision.
