Top Joburg South stories in 2013
Joburg South can boast about the amazing achievements of hosting a successful African Cup of Nations (AFCON) among other events at the home of soccer, FNB Stadium.
JOHANNESBURG – The year kicked off on a celebratory mood in the south of Johannesburg when South Africa hosted AFCON 2013, a tournament which provided Bafana Bafana an opportunity to impress the nation. Although they did not make the finals of the tournament, the team represented South Africa well.
Among other events staged in the South of Johannesburg included concerts by Bon Jovi, Metallica, R Kelly – Ladies Tour, Rihanna’s Diamonds Tour and Justin Bieber’s Believe Tour. Justin Bieber’s tour was unfortunately followed by news of a heist which was revealed a day after the concert.
Unfortunately, it was not all good news throughout the year; an accident in Kibler Park claimed the lives of two former Covenant College learners in an accident involving a truck and five cars.
The annual Lusito Land concert promised to be another event where celebration would continue, however, the rape of a girl took the spotlight from all celebrations.
The year ended with news of former President Nelson Mandela passing away and the official memorial service held at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday December 10.
