Harcourts donates to community garden

Their initial objective was simply to grow vegetables to nourish children and their families with the long term goal being to establish a centre where community members could learn how to garden.

HARCOURTS Delta in Mondeor recently donated R26 990 to the Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation.

Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation (BDHF) upholds a vision to support and nurture as many indigent, vulnerable and at-risk youth and their caregivers as possible. Since 2012, BDHF has been based in Mapetla Soweto, providing support to vulnerable children and their caregivers from impoverished communities in Mapetla, Protea and Chiawelo Soweto.

Harcourts staff started clearing a 420sqm area that was previously used as a rubbish dump on the premises of Sediba Thuto Primary School Mapetla, one of Gauteng’s four worst-performing schools at the time, transforming it into a vegetable garden. There was a need for a sustainable food security project that could feed the community. A garden for the community, run by members of the community, was established.

Their initial objective was simply to grow vegetables to nourish children and their families, with the long-term goal being to establish a centre where community members could learn how to garden.

Marc Rodrigues and Michael Sears, principals of Harcourts Delta, visited the garden in Soweto to hand over the donation from the Harcourts Foundation. The funding was used to buy wood chips, a toolshed and compost, which will all greatly improve productivity. “We are really proud to support such a worthwhile initiative and we hope that the garden continues to grow for the benefit of the school and the wider community,” they said.

According to Richard Gray, CEO of Harcourts South Africa, the Harcourts Foundation was launched on the back of an overwhelming response from its members wanting to make a difference in their local communities. “Through ongoing fundraising efforts, sponsorships and voluntary commission contributions by agents, our group has raised more than R2.1-million for the foundation. By assisting the Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation, which does so much for so many with so little, we’re upholding the Harcourts Foundation’s commitment to providing support to help, grow and enrich our communities,” he said.

Anyone wishing to contribute to BDHF should contact Harcourts Delta on either 011 680 4428 or email the Harcourts Foundation at foundation@harcourts.co.za.
