KIEREN NAIDOO: “The power outage really affects business because most of our machines operate on power and at home, I was also greatly inconvenienced because I’m currently studying and I should always have electricity to connect to the internet and study but with a power shortage it’s difficult.”
Last weekend City Power experienced an unplanned power outage at the Mulbarton Substation leaving several areas without power, including Bassonia, Glenvista, Aspen Hills, Mall of the South, The Glen and other surrounding areas. The Chronicle caught up with residents in some of these areas to find out how it affected their day to day life.
ANTOINETTE SCHIMPER: “We were very fortunate because the fault didn’t affect my area but I know it’s always frustrating to get such episodes, especially during the weekend when people are home and relaxing.”LYNN ROYCE: ”Although not getting a particular service like electricity due to a fault can be frustrating, I believe the councillor did her best to ensure she kept us well informed of what was happening and it made everything easier because at least explanations were readily available as to what was wrong and what was being done about it.”WYNAND PRETORIUS: “Going some time without electricity or water exposes the kind of service delivery we have because there should always be measures to ensure fire accidents like that one don’t happen. But, however, a few hours in the dark doesn’t kill anyone, we actually created a good family time out of it, chatting around the fireplace.”SARAH MUTAMBA: “Spending time without water and, especially electricity, is frustrating and can be very dangerous in the area we live in. Darkness makes it easy for criminals to target our area. We recently had two house break-ins in a street from our house in Glenvista.”
