Illegal dumpers beware

“This is a warning to all illegal dumpers to adhere to the law and not get on the wrong side of it."

RECENTLY an offender was caught dumping rubbish illegally along Swartkoppies Road.

Ward 23 councillor Sarah Wissler, with help from her illegal-dumping task force, plans on nipping this issue in the bud – she shares these plans.

Sarah recently set up a task force to tackle the issue of illegal dumping (numerous community members who share a passion for this issue also offered their assistance). A day after this task force was formed, one of their unmarked JMPD vehicles caught offenders illegally dumping on Swartkoppies Road and impounded the vehicle.

“Illegal dumping in the City of Johannesburg is an offence for which an offender can be fined R3 000, made to remove their rubble and have their car impounded,” said Sarah. “We will no longer tolerate this environmentally-harmful crime. Areas, where this crime is most prevalent in Ward 23, is True North and Klipriver roads, Klipriver Road near the airfield and most of Swartkoppies Road.”

Pikitup and JMPD visited the affected areas with Sarah and the task force and did some inspection; they have seen the extent to which illegal dumping is growing every day.

“This is a warning to all illegal dumpers to adhere to the law and not get on the wrong side of it, otherwise they will be dealt with accordingly,” said Sarah.

She discussed some plans to fight this crime.

“We will continue having people monitoring these affected areas, JMPD has provided an unmarked vehicle to patrol targeted dumping areas. Any offenders caught will be dealt with by the law.

“In addition, Pikitup will clean up the corner of True North and Klipriver roads as they have two tipper trucks and a front end loader to assist in getting rid of the rubble. The Democratic Alliance prides itself with service delivery and we shall continue delivering on the mandate to keep our ward clean,” she added.

According to Sarah, since putting these plans into action with the task force and JMPD, offenders are caught regularly now.

“We are already seeing good results after forming a task force. We appreciate each individual who works passionately to keep Ward 23 clean and environmentally-friendly,” said Sarah.
