GRANT COETZEE: “Not only is it unfair to people who have extra expenses for generators, it’s unfair to all household. Electricity is not optional; it’s everyone’s livelihood on which we all depend.”
COMMUNITY members were asked whether they think it is fair to pay for electricity bills, as well as fuel to power their generators (if they are privileged enough to have a generators) when load-shedding takes place. Not surprisingly, everyone agrees it’s unfair – they explain why.
IMAMELO MOLOI: “It’s unfair to expect people to pay so much for both electricity and generator fuel. A lot of people are unemployed and, electricity being a necessity, many people can hardly afford it as it is.”
KYLE HARDACRE: “Obviously it’s not fair, but it’s one of the harsh realities of living in South Africa nowadays. Don’t ever think the government will reimburse anyone for these extra expenses, either. They can’t care.”
BRIAN SHABALALA: “Certainly it’s unfair and the government doesn’t worry about how it affects us all. Load-shedding is already affecting businesses negatively and the extra expense of generator fuel is worsening our budgets even more.”
PIETER MARAIS: “No, it’s definitely not fair. Despite the fact that the ANC is causing all these ever-worsening problems, I’m sure most people will keep voting for them. It’s so frustrating and messed up.”
