Meet the South’s influential artists
Nothing feels as good as finding a great piece of art you love, at an affordable price, and knowing that you are bringing some light into someone else's life.
NINE artists from Johannesburg South will be exhibiting their paintings at this year’s Rotary Arts Festival, which will again be proudly showcased at Rosebank Mall from May 30 to June 9.
With over 500 artworks from 100 artists, the Rotary Arts Festival is a highlight of Johannesburg’s cultural calendar and a date to be diarised.
Whether you want to grow your art investment with a piece by one of South Africa’s emerging artists, or match the decor in one of your favourite rooms, the Rotary Art Expo has just what you’re looking for.
As a charity-based exhibition, Rosebank Rotary Arts Expo is unique in the South African Art Market and donates all its proceeds from display panels rented to artists. These proceeds this year will be going to three pre-selected charities: SA Guide Dogs College of Orientation and Mobility; a three day Youth Leadership Course championed by the Rotary Club of Rosebank; and the acquisition of a container for use by the Palliative Care Unit at the Baragwaneth Hospital, Johannesburg.

Get to know the artists from the South
Dalila de Matos is an award-winning mixed-media artist who specialises in colourful landscape and portraiture. She has taken part in over 30 exhibitions and her works form part of private and public collections, both in South Africa and abroad. She has been published in the South African Artist Magazine.
Lois Fisher lives in Brackenhurst and her preferred mediums are oil and acrylic. She is passionate about painting skylines, particularly of Johannesburg. She works on commissions for private collectors and corporate companies. Her works hang in private homes as far afield as Spain and the USA and she has taken part in numerous collaborative exhibitions in Gauteng and Cape Town.
Known for her versatility, seascapes and vibrant sunsets, Ina Millman achieved the second highest sales at the Rosebank Rotary Art Festival last year. This year she will exhibit work again, including her latest contemporary landscapes in rich textures and joyous colour.
Working predominantly in watercolours, artist Barbi Vandwalle enjoys the transparency of the medium, the flow and the often unexpected results that add excitement to the painting. Her understanding of colour and tonal contrasts and her love for nature and big open spaces reflect her subject choices, giving her works a true South African flavour.
Keith Herd is a self-taught experimental artist who works mainly in acrylics with varied subject matter in bright colours.
Having recently moved to the Vaal from Cullinan, Norbert Schling will share his wide knowledge with beginner to advanced artists by giving classes. He is known for his “Old Master style” still-life paintings.
Magdalena Marais is an art teacher from the Vaal and a very diverse artist. She loves realism, but her artworks must still look like paintings. Flowers are her passion and she has recently started portraiture and figure work.
Teaching art in the South for seven years, Angie Da Silva of Silva Arts prefers acrylic paint as her medium and her style includes bold prints with a bright colour palette.
Simone Russell, an artist who lives and works in Johannesburg, works mainly in acrylic and oil paints, as well as dabbling in watercolours. She also loves drawing. Her work revolves around nature, flowers, birds and predominantly bees. She frequently uses gold and silver leaf to emphasise the precious value the flora and fauna bring to our environment.
Come and enjoy the many artworks on display. There are hundreds of artworks to be seen, multiple interactive workshops to attend and the final GTC Portrait Award entries and results to view.
