New traffic lights to be installed at the intersection of Orpen and Letaba roads

After a number of traffic counts and various tests conducted, it was eventually agreed that traffic lights would be installed at the intersection of Orpen and Letaba roads.

For many years residents have battled to turn into Orpen Road from Letaba Road, Eastcliff, due to high volumes of traffic on this road.

With three shopping centres (The Glen, Tiago Centre and Comoro Crossing), multiple businesses and with it being a main road which links different suburbs together, the road is always busy.

As a result there have been a number of accidents and even fatalities along this road over the past few months. With this being of grave concern to residents and business owners, a number of petitions were submitted to council, seeking traffic calming measures to be implemented in an attempt to limit accidents that take place.

In light of this, I did a number of inspections of this road with the Johannesburg Road Agency’s chief engineer, Esther Smidt. After a number of traffic counts and various tests conducted, it was eventually agreed that traffic lights would be installed at the intersection of Orpen and Letaba roads.

I am extremely pleased they are now implementing traffic lights at this intersection and I’m confident this will assist with limiting the number of accidents that will take place on this road and will provide safer access to Orpen Road for residents.

I hope similar measures can be implemented along the other problematic roads in my ward.
