St Martin’s School launches rockets to commemorate the landing on the moon 50 years ago.

ON July 16, 1969, the US Space and Rocket Centre launched the Apollo 11 on a mission to land astronauts on the moon.

July 16 marked the 50th anniversary of this iconic day.

The US Space and Rocket Centre are involved in a global initiative to commemorate this iconic day by coordinating a global rocket launch. Geraldine Naidoo, the St Martin’s Prep School science teacher, is alumni of the US Space and Rocket Centre and had been invited to participate in this initiative.

St Martin’s launched rockets on the prep school field to commemorate this iconic day. The science teachers performed amazing experiments and the Wits School of Aeronautical Engineers did a demonstration, explaining to the children and parents how rockets work.

The prep school’s new drum majorettes squad put on their first public performance, marking this special occasion.

Families were invited to enjoy the spectacle of the rocket launch and have dinner under the stars. The Filthy Moustache Food Truck was on site selling food and beverages.

St Martin’s parents were given an opportunity to sponsor a rocket, which were supplied by SA Rocketry and set up using their launch system.

It was a fun-filled event attended by many parents and children who stood in awe and wonder at the launching of the rockets.
