GALLERY: Sue Webber shares passion for stained glass designs
“I’ve designed and created quite a lot of stained-glass windows, lamps, sun-catchers as well as other beautiful pieces."
AT the September meeting of Eikenhof Women’s Institute, members enjoyed a fascinating talk on stained glass from guest speaker Sue Webber, from Henley on Klip.
Sue, who has been working with glass for more than 25 years, explained it does take some skill and lots of practice to get it right. “To cut glass, you need to make a controlled break, scoring the glass first, then applying pressure and breaking it into the shapes required.
“You have to work on a flat surface and put numbers on the glass you cut so you won’t become mixed up. Practice makes perfect,” she said.
She explained to the women how she became interested in this hobby. “My husband was a manager at a farm and my job was to take care of the staff. One of the staff member’s wives showed me the art of stained glass and from there, I’ve never stopped trying to perfect it.
“I’ve designed and created quite a lot of stained-glass windows, lamps, sun-catchers as well as other beautiful pieces. Angels for Christmas are one of my favourites to design and make. Really, it’s a self-funding hobby and I can work away at it for hours on end.
“Glass is expensive and I buy from stockists in Meyerton and Pretoria, different thicknesses for different designs. It is quite an expensive hobby to begin, but I do sell starter packs, which are a good price.”
After Sue had finished her talk and made a bird from glass, the women could view some of the beautiful pieces she had made, with a few buying a piece to treasure.
Tea and snacks were served. The next meeting will take place on October 9, at St Andrew’s Church Hall, Burger Street, Suideroordk, at 9.30am. Please phone the president, Joy Boswell, for more information on 084 526 5857. Visitors welcome.
