MMC for Housing outlines plans in place

In an exclusive interview with the CHRONICLE, he said thousands of title deeds will be issued across all regions.

Mlungisi Mabaso, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Housing in the City of Johannesburg, recently announced plans set in place to uplift residents.

In an exclusive interview with the CHRONICLE, he said thousands of title deeds will be issued across all regions.

“As the government of local unity, we are determined to provide our residents with home ownership through various means and rapidly through the issuing of title deeds. We have started issuing them robustly and we will continue to dignify our residents in all seven regions of this City,” said Mabaso.

He told the CHRONICLE they have started issuing title deeds in areas such as South Hills, Alexandra and Riverside.

“A process of reblocking informal settlements takes centre stage. It is my vision to make informal settlements habitable; however, that is not going to be possible if there are those of us who choose to invade land,” he said.

He also emphasised that he will not tolerate land invasion.

According to Mabaso, almost all hostels in the City need urgent intervention. His department plans to turn them into family units; he said this process has already started.

“The most needed intervention – to make them fit for human habitation – has been implemented across City-owned hostels,” he said.

He also ensured that he will put his focus on old age homes by making sure residents have a comfortable stay.

“Senior citizens are very close to my heart. A budget has been set aside for maintenance and repairs of our old age homes. We have started with Moffat View Old Age Home, and the team is assessing others to see what work needs to be done,” said Mabaso.
