Salaam Foundation makes a difference

This weekend (April 11) we distributed the packs to 50 young ladies at Al Mubarak Centre in Mountain View - Fatima Sookharia

In 2019, a group of hikers headed by Bokkie Coovadia summitted Mt Elbrus in Russia, the highest mountain in Europe. The fundraising project was supported logistically by Salaam Foundation.

The hike was spurred on by Sr Mooniba Bhyat to raise funds to buy two reusable sanitary pad cutting machines.

One of the directors of the foundation, Fatima Sookharia, said these machines have since been imported and installed and have created opportunities for local NGOs to produce the sanitary pads that are now finally reaching deserving recipients.

“This weekend (April 11) we distributed the packs to 50 young ladies at Al Mubarak Centre in Mountain View, a highly impoverished region south of Johannesburg. Sr Mooniba conducted a workshop on how to use the pads effectively and hygienically and the response from the recipients was overwhelming.

“The community also received its monthly supply of meat, this time in preparation for Ramadan. We will also be supplying iftaar for 100 people daily in this area as well as meals for 210 children throughout the upcoming year Inshallah,” she said.
