Community shows appreciation to security officers, patrollers

The women come together daily to prepare warm drinks and a snack.

A group of women have been treating security officers, patrollers and SAPS members from Alberton and Germiston with something warm to drink and a little something to eat.

The RECORD spoke to one of the organisers, Jean Ingram, who said this was their way of thanking the officers.

“These officers are looking out for the safety of our community 24/7, and this is the community’s way of thanking them for all they do,” said Jean.

According to Jean, when the riots started, there were extra community patrollers on the road who were providing this service out of their own pocket.

“We then decided the security guards and our police force were also working extra hard. We wanted to say thank you to all the people who keep us safe daily,” she said.

“With the cold weather, we decided to offer something that would warm them up, like a cup of coffee and a snack, just to keep them going.”

A helping hand

It all depends on what donations the group of women receive. Some days they serve boerewors rolls and others curry and rice.

The group consists of seven women, two from the Albermarle area, three from Alberton and two from Brackenhurst.

“There are lots more that have been contributed by cooking and providing ingredients to enable us to do this. The community, in general, is appreciative of all those who keep us safe daily,” she said.
