A new star on the rise
Kayzie tells us about her musical journey that started four years ago.
An exciting new name and voice are about to grace the South African airwaves.
Going by the stage name of Kayzia, Kayla Van Der Heever from Mulbarton said she fell in love with music at a very young age.
“I am in my first year at the University of Johannesburg, studying a Bcom in industrial psychology. I have always enjoyed singing. I remember my previous school, Marist Brother Linmyer, had a talent show when I was in Grade 11, which I entered for fun and then won. I then realised I wanted to pursue music.
“I also started singing lessons with Valeska Muller Academy not expecting anything, but she motivated me and helped me grow more than I imagined was possible and inspired me to pursue this professionally,” said Kayzie.
Debut single
Her debut single Sweeter is an unmistakable pop anthem laced with an 808 hip-hop thread. It is produced by platinum-selling and multi-chart-topping artist Daniel Baron.
From a mere talent show to enrolling at the Valeska Muller Vocal Academy, she quickly started to realise that singing was more than just a hobby.
“My dream is to be able to create music for people to relate to. Sometimes, it is hard to put your feelings or thoughts into words and then when you listen to that one song that just does it for you, you don’t feel so alone. I want to be able to provide that for people.”
After going through a very difficult time, the 20-year-old is optimistic.
“I only really started singing properly four years ago, but I’ve always loved finding new music and I enjoy almost every genre, which helps me connect to the music industry very well,” she said.
“My mom has always been extremely supportive of everything I do and she works incredibly hard to ensure I have the best possibility of making my dreams come true.
“My vocal coach, Valeska Muller, has helped me grow not only as a singer but also as a person and she helped build my confidence in ways I didn’t think were possible. They have both motivated and supported me through every step of the way,” she said.
Her music influences are Ariana Grande, Lewis Capaldi, James Arthur, and Maisie Peters.
Kayzia is also a horse rider and adores all animals. She will jump at any opportunity to connect with them in any way that she can.
