Care packets handed out on Women’s Day
We handed out care packets at the Union and Clinton hospitals on Women's Day on August 9.
We decided that we would do the drop-off on Monday morning, and it worked out perfectly seeing as it was Women’s Day too.
We were very excited to get ready and load the packs in the car and go and put some smiles on Alberton’s heroes’ faces.
Our first stop was the Clinton. We got there and had to explain to the security at the door what we were here to do.
He went and called a nurse who works in the Covid ward and when she arrived at the reception, we explained how the Alberton community had come together to put these packs together as a thank you from us all.
She was in complete amazement and so truly grateful that their hard work has not gone unnoticed. Her words were to us the whole time that we were with her is that God can only bless us.
Our next stop was the Union and again we were in reception and I was able to make a phone call to the Covid ICU and the nurse leader on duty came down. We, unfortunately, did not get any names as that was the last thing on our minds to get, we were truly overwhelmed by how grateful these nurses were that people can see the hard work that they put into their jobs.

She then allowed us to go with her to the ICU (Green ward – the ICU is split in two) to show the rest of the staff what the community has done for them. The amount of love that I felt for the staff members that I was able to speak to was just a feeling I don’t think I can ever explain.
Why did we choose to do this on Women’s Day, no matter the gender of the staff who have been on the front line fighting this pandemic? It just seemed like a good idea to my mum and me to go and give a little hope to those who were working on a public holiday.
Again while so many of us got to rest and stay at home and remain safe, they were on their feet making sure they are doing everything they possibly can to make sure our loved ones come home.
I wish we could have done more for not just the staff in the Covid wards but for the rest of the staff in the hospitals as well as those on the roads who transport our loved ones to and from the hospital you know.
All I can say is thank you to all those who helped us make this possible.
