Melville Koppies come to life
Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) is open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30 with no need to pre-book.
August 22 was a busy day at Melville Koppies Central when more than 120 people visited the Koppies, including one group from Meetup, a group of students from Wits, members of the archaeological society as well as numerous small groups of friends or family.
Even so, the 55-hectare space never seemed crowded as groups spread out across the numerous paths on the Koppies.
Distance from the Koppies didn’t seem to worry visitors who had come from as far as Sunninghill, Sandton and Rivonia in the north, Primrose Hills in the east and Soweto in the south.
There were even local visitors from Emmarentia, Northcliff, Dunkeld and Fordsburg.
“We had the time of our lives,” said one couple from Soweto who did the Heritage Trail.

“My wife has been nagging me for so long to come and now that we’ve come, we’ll be back.”
Even a bunch of students from Wits were up early to test themselves on the 5km trail, determined to come again and continue on their paths to lead ‘wholesome lives’.
