Numerous awardees were honoured during community environmental awards held at Southdale Pikitup Depot on October 1.
Pikitup, the waste management company of the City of Johannesburg, rewarded and acknowledged individuals, businesses, schools, co-operatives and environmental forums on the day.

These interested parties have contributed immensely in diverting waste away from its landfill sites through the community environmental awards initiative.
According to Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi, the prestigious occasion was hosted to recognise and encourage sustainable environmental partnerships.

“The community environmental awards ceremony is an initiative of Pikitup aligned to the strategic objective of creating sustainable partnerships. This is to ensure the City of Johannesburg attains the vision of being recognised as the cleanest city on the continent and be among the cleanest cities in the world,” he said.

The awards ceremony was said to be the seventh of its kind, recognising these individuals and entities throughout the years for their contribution.
During her address, MD of Pikitup Bukelwa Njingolo stressed that communities should recycle, reuse and reduce.

“The cleanliness of the City of Johannesburg is not only a responsibility of Pikitup or this collective but a responsibility for all of us. It’s a collective effort. Right now we have a crisis of running out of landfill space. Last year, our reports stated we are left with four and a half years of space,” she said.

Awardee Andy Balaram of the University of Johannesburg said: “On behalf of the university, I would like to express our sincere gratitude to Pikitup for acknowledging the volunteers on this prestigious event. Our partnership is gaining momentum and I pray it grows from strength to strength.”
