Zak’s Enviro Club for children

There is no better way for the young ones to get to know more about nature and protecting the environment than actually get out there.

And that is exactly what Zak’s Enviro Club offers children. The club was established in 2014 with the main aim to teach children about nature and to have fun in nature.

Adele Spear who is their teacher said there are three things they believe in at Zak’s Enviro Club.

Taking care of nature and cleaning up litter also forms par of the activities at Zak’s Enviro Club.

“We love people, we love animals and we love the environment. We bring children from different backgrounds and different schools together during holidays to have fun and learn about the environment and animals,” said Spear.

She said children nowadays spend time indoors with technology and even more so during lockdown whereas Rietvlei is a beautiful place where they can explore the great outdoors and share in fun activities.

“We also believe in recycling so we teach them to look after the environment and making sure that they don’t waste but make the best of what have.

“All the children like feeding the animals in the farmyard during the morning. They also like swimming in the river and doing a lot of clean-ups.”

She said children also need to bring in their bikes and scooters just to allow them to feel free when they are riding in the environment.

“There are several activities that the children are doing daily and today they are crab fishing and painting.

Crab catching is but one of the many activities the young ones can take part in.

Through the programme, the older children also pick up leadership qualities and they learn how to look out for the little ones. We believe in developing leadership skills and teaching them how to work with younger children,” she said.
