The bird migrants are back

Birds that migrate to the northern hemisphere during winter are just beginning to come back to Melville Koppies.

It’s another reminder that winter is over for another year.

If you’re lucky, you’ll spot the European bee-eaters, with their distinctive staccato flight, catching the breeze with the swallows high up in the sky.

Or you could hear a Diederik cuckoo making its persistent high-pitched dee-dee-deederik whistle or its less common, mournful-sounding cousin, Klaas’s cuckoo.

Melville Koppies is a perfect place for beginner birders.

A budding ornithologist with her brand-new birding book led her parents on a birding tour through the Koppies.

Melville Koppies Central (Nature Reserve and Heritage Site) is open every Sunday from 08:00 to 11:30 and there is no need to pre-book.

The cost is R80 for adults and R40 for children. There is also a season ticket at R500 per adult available. These are not transferable.

All income is used for the maintenance and security of the Koppies. Security on the Koppies is provided and you can park in secure parking opposite the entrance at Marks Park in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
