The school opened in November 1971 in Crown Mines, with nine learners and 12 staff members.

The day started with all the staff members and children singing happy birthday and receiving a cupcake.

The children then enjoyed some fun in the sun on the waterslides and jumping castles to celebrate their birthday.

The acting principal, Mark Lynch, also gave a short speech in which he gave the history of the school and honoured the founding principal, Frances Vorwerg.

Lynch said, “Frances Vorwerg aims to develop the children entrusted to our care to become trustworthy, helpful and responsible citizens, irrespective of whether they find employment in the open labour market or sheltered employment.

“The school offers a boarding facility with well-equipped rooms and bathrooms, where learners reside from Monday to Friday following in-house tuition and structured programmes directed at enabling the children to manage their school career and develop their community skills.

“We also offer limited transport from and to Orange Farm, Ennerdale, Alberton and surrounds. The school is privileged to have several Sprinter (22-seater vehicles), especially kitted for our children. Each vehicle is monitored with onboard cameras and safety devices.

“Also on offer at the school are various sports and cultural activities for able-bodied as well as disabled learners. Our learners excel in the Alberton Eisteddfod and we are proud of the athletes that represent us at the National Games for Persons with Physical Disabilities every year.
