Help fund weightlifter’s trip to compete abroad

The self-employed couture fashion designer is making it in the fraternity of weightlifting, and she needs monetary assistance towards her trip to Egypt.

Laryne Jefferies, who initially started weightlifting as a hobby, has grown tremendously in the sport.

In a few weeks the 30-year-old, who is a member of Movement Crew (a strength and CrossFit gym in Brackenhurst), will be off to compete in Egypt.

This will be her debut on the international stage and her first chance to compete internationally with other females.

She qualified to compete at the African Senior Championships in the 71kg weight class, taking place from October 26 to November 4.

While training hard, Jefferies raised funds for her trip and also get her coach, Matthew Hurn, to join her.

“I found weightlifting through CrossFit. I have no sports background. In 2020, I switched to only weightlifting and did my first weightlifting competition before Covid-19 hit. I used to compete in the women’s 64kg weightlifting competition in which I hold three records,” said Jefferies.

Jefferies, who has a passion for Olympic weightlifting, last competed in the provincial championships, where she broke the record for the heaviest snatch, clean and jerk.

“Those lifts qualified me for Egypt. We’ve calculated our expenses, and they sum up to R70 000, covering flights, accommodation, transport, fees and tests. This is the first stepping stone to qualifying for the world championships and qualifying for other competitions. Weightlifting is my passion, it’s not my career,” she explained.

She said those passionate about the sport should put in the work and surround themselves with the right people.
