Alberton Wrestling Club wins big in provincial tournament
After securing a well-deserved win, Alberton Wrestling Club looks to become the best club in the country soon.
Wrestlers belonging to Alberton Wrestling Club came out victorious in a spectacular event on February 25.
They recently took part in the Provincial Open Championships in Brixton Multipurpose Sports Centre, Mayfair West, Johannesburg.
The club came in third place out of 38 clubs.
Alberton Wrestling Club brought home 28 medals in the championships which saw over 600 entries.
“Out of the 28 medals, Alberton achieved nine gold, 11 silver and eight bronze medals, as well as three fourth places. This goes to show that the sport is growing at a rapid pace. Amateur wrestling is where it used to be in the early days. In the 70s, 80s amateur wrestling was very big,” explained Renier Janse van Rensburg, president of the club.
He reiterated that they are aiming to be the best club in the country by the end of the year.
“Some of our top wrestlers are now trying to qualify for the Olympics for 2024. This is a nice and healthy environment for youngsters and we invite the community to join us. All ages are welcome. Alberton Wrestling Club is a family-orientated club and this is a great sport,” he said.
The club is growing rapidly and they have at least 10 newbies per week.
Janse van Rensburg said wrestling as a sport has several benefits.
“Wrestling helps develop athletic skills, responsibility and mental toughness and it brings children together. It teaches individuals how to focus on something and master it,” he said.
They are also in partnership with local schools and hold talks where they familiarise children with wrestling.
