AACL calls for national support amid rising challenges
With your help every AACL branch can stay open and continue its' vital work.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) wishes to clarify recent reports regarding financial challenges faced by its Durban and Pietermaritzburg (PMB) branch.
While that appeal was specific to local operations, it reflects a broader truth: all AACL branches across South Africa are under unprecedented strain due to the tough economic climate, declining donations, and the absence of government funding.
Each branch operates independently, raising its own funds to care for animals in need within their communities. Despite these challenges, the teams remain united in one mission: to protect, rescue, and rehome vulnerable animals and to stand up against cruelty wherever it occurs.

An AACL representative said: “From Johannesburg to Cape Town, Durban, Ladysmith, Port Elizabeth, and Bredasdorp, our inspectors, veterinarians, and shelter staff work tirelessly on the frontlines, rescuing animals from abuse, providing affordable veterinary care to underserved communities, and giving thousands of abandoned dogs and cats a second chance at life. But they cannot do this alone. Without the generosity of the public, no branch can continue this vital work.”
To ensure the Durban and PMB branch receives immediate support, the AACL National Body will send a team to meet with the local branch, assess their situation, and identify practical ways to assist. “This collaborative effort reflects our commitment to ensuring that every branch remains a place of safety and hope for animals in need,” added the representative.

How you can help:
• Support your nearest AACL branch with donations, volunteering, or supplies
• Visit www.aacl.co.za or www.facebook.com/AACLJHB
• Sponsor the care of an animal in need
• Shop or donate at one of the AACL charity stores
• Advocate for responsible pet ownership in your community
Every act of kindness strengthens the national network and ensures that no branch has to close its doors to the animals who rely on them.
“The Durban and PMB appeal is a reminder of what we all face: rising costs, fewer donations, and growing numbers of animals in desperate need,” said national body spokesperson, Carren Nickloes. “This is not a story of decline, but of resilience – branches across the country standing tall against immense challenges. We invite the public to stand with us.”
For over 69 years, the AACL has stood for compassion, responsibility, and animal welfare in South Africa. With your support, they can continue giving hope, health, and homes to animals for decades to come.
