Residents urged to stay alert against fake disconnection notices

City Power alerts the public to verify communications to protect themselves from these scams.

City Power Johannesburg has issued a public warning about criminals impersonating its officials to defraud residents.

The fraudsters are sending fake disconnection notices, using forged IDs, and circulating fraudulent bank accounts to trick people into making unauthorised payments.

The utility reminds customers of key safety measures to protect themselves:

• City staff never request cash payments at homes.

• Residents must verify any SMS or email before responding to ensure it is legitimate.

• Disconnection teams always carry official IDs, job cards, and branded vehicles.

• Payments should only be made via official City banking accounts or trusted platforms.

City Power encourages the public to stay alert and protect themselves from these scams.

For assistance or to report suspicious activity, residents can contact the City Power helpline at 0800 002 587 or the Joburg Call Centre at 0860 56 28 74.
