Steaming Mug Café hosts weekly craft gathering with special guest demo

The Thursday group received a live demonstration on spinning sheepdog hair into usable wool.

Thursday mornings at The Steaming Mug Café continue to grow in popularity as residents gather for knitting, crochet and conversation.

Recently, the group had a special visit from Sue Green of JOY Dogs, who gave a live demonstration showing how she spins wool from the hair of her English Sheepdogs.

The session offered a closer look at a traditional and unusual craft that many in the group had not seen before. Café owner Ken de Melo said the morning was both enjoyable and educational.

Ken said, “Sue gave us a live demo on how she takes her English Sheepdogs’ hair and spins it into usable wool. I tried it myself as well, and it really made me realise how much work goes into it. It looks simple, but it takes time, patience, and real skill.”

Sue Green explained that, while the process is unusual, she enjoys sharing it with others.

Sue Green said: “People are often surprised when they hear about it, but it is a natural fibre and it can be used in the same way as other wool. It takes practice, but it is very rewarding to see the finished product come together.”

The weekly Thursday group has become a regular meeting point for people who enjoy knitting and crochet, as well as those who simply want to spend time in a friendly environment.

Alongside the crafting, there is also time for conversation and coffee, which many say is just as important as the work they do with their hands.

“It’s a relaxed space where people can come together, share skills, and enjoy each other’s company. That’s really what it’s about,” added Ken.

The group welcomes new members. For more information, contact Judith on 071 873 7570.
