From Joburg south to the world: Reserve bank investigator recognised globally

Global conflict shifts 40 Under 40 Global Awards to a virtual stage.

Glenvista resident Gerald Mariemuthoo has been awarded the 40 Under 40 Global Special Honorary Award on April 25, completing a rare sweep of national, continental and global awards in recognition of his contributions to financial forensic investigation.

Mariemuthoo, a Currency Integrity Investigator at the South African Reserve Bank, was first named a 40 Under 40 South Africa winner in 2025, followed by his latest 40 Under 40 Africa Special Honorary Award.

His global award presentation was originally set to take place in Dubai but was held virtually due to the ongoing global conflict affecting the country.

With over a decade in law enforcement before moving into financial crime prevention, Mariemuthoo has been recognized for his work combating fraud, strengthening institutional integrity, and driving public education on counterfeit currency.

“Recognition like this is not the finish line; it outlines my responsibility in my work. The real mission is using your platform to build systems that are ethical, resilient, and inclusive, and to mentor the next person coming up behind you,” said Mariemuthoo.

His journey from Glenvista to the global stage is being held up as proof that discipline, integrity, and service can elevate ordinary beginnings into international recognition.
