Joburg pushes ahead with energy-saving and infrastructure upgrades
The city reports progress in streetlight upgrades, smart meters and embedded generation under the 2026 strategy.
The City of Johannesburg has outlined significant progress in its Energy Sustainability Strategy as part of the 2026 State of the City Address highlights released under the theme ‘Foundation for the Future, Your City, Our City’.
Delivered by Executive Mayor Dada Morero, the Sustainable Energy section of the address detailed steps taken to improve efficiency, expand infrastructure, and reduce energy consumption across the metro.
The city has retrofitted 108 additional streetlights and installed 1 218 public lights, contributing to an estimated annual saving of 804 megawatt-hours (MWh).
A total of 676 buildings have been measured for energy performance, with 54 identified for Energy Performance Certificates and 29 certificates already issued.
The city also reported the installation of 1 500 smart electricity meters and the restoration of 2 686 electricity supply plants.
In the 2024/25 financial year, 36.25 megawatts (MW) of approved embedded generation was recorded, marking a step toward diversifying the city’s energy supply.
In the transport sector, the electric vehicle charging station programme at Reuven service delivery centre has been completed, signalling progress in supporting the shift to cleaner mobility.
The measures form part of its broader effort to build a more resilient and sustainable energy system for residents and businesses.
“Electricity and energy are a major cause for concern in the Johannesburg metro. We are working with our energy utilities to resolve the energy crisis. We look forward to implementing more energy-saving initiatives that will allow the city to become sustainable,” said Morero.
