WATCH: Lane closure on R59 after metal spill causes major delays near Thokoza off-ramp

A metal load from a truck spills onto the roadway, forcing lane closure and heavy traffic congestion; EMPD urges caution and alternative routes.

Motorists travelling on the R59 freeway are experiencing significant delays after a truck carrying metal lost part of its load, forcing the closure of a lane approximately 3km before the Thokoza off-ramp.

According to authorities, the truck was transporting metals when the load became dislodged and spilled onto the roadway, posing a serious hazard to road users.

The incident resulted in heavy traffic congestion, with delays stretching for several kilometres as emergency services worked to secure the scene.

EMPD responded promptly and remains on site to manage traffic and ensure the safety of motorists.

Officers have implemented traffic control measures while arrangements are made to clear the debris and reopen the affected lane.

EMPD has urged motorists to approach the area with caution, reduce speed, and follow the instructions of traffic officers on duty.

Drivers are also advised to consider alternative routes where possible to avoid delays.

In a strong safety reminder, EMPD called on truck drivers and logistics operators to ensure that all loads are properly secured before travelling.

“Whatever is loaded on trucks or other heavy vehicles must be tightly secured, and additional safety measures should be implemented where necessary to prevent such incidents and ensure everyone’s safety,” the department said.

No injuries have been reported at this stage.

Authorities will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the cleanup operation progresses.
