Family, friends and residents came together at Meyersdal Estate Park for a moving memorial celebrating the life of Juanita Vermeulen, remembering her love, strength and legacy while standing in solidarity with her loved ones and all women affected by violence.
The Alberton community came together in a powerful show of unity and remembrance to honour the life of the late Juanita Vermeulen, whose tragic death has deeply affected residents across the area.
Friends, family and community members gathered at Meyersdal Park at 12:00 for In Her Name: Juanita – A Day of Remembrance and Solidarity, a memorial event held to celebrate her life and offer comfort to those left behind.
The gathering began with a short welcome by organiser Sarah May, who thanked attendees for standing together in compassion and respect.
This was followed by an emotional tribute from Juanita’s mother, who showed immense strength as she addressed the crowd.
A moment of silence was then observed, accompanied by an instrumental song that created a reflective and solemn atmosphere.
Sarah also shared a poem titled In Her Name, reminding those present that the gathering was not about seeking answers but about honouring Juanita as a person, her laughter, her love and the life she lived.
The tribute resonated deeply, reinforcing the importance of remembering her beyond the tragedy.
Attendees later released purple and black balloons into the sky, symbolising love, remembrance and farewell.
