Let’s be honest, denim must be the longest fashion statement ever and this year is no exception. Fashion stores are beginning to get their autumn and winter clothing in and denim is playing a huge part, whether in jeans, skirts, shirts, dresses or jackets, you’ll be able to find that perfect wardrobe accessory.
Gardening news
This past week the weather has been very indecisive, with plenty of rain. Great for the gardens! In March you can buy your bulbs but the weather can still be quite hot and soil temperatures still too high for planting bulbs, so store them in a cool, dark place until it’s much cooler. Normally by late April or May you can begin to plant bulbs. Even if you only have a small garden daffodils can look gorgeous and you can also sow Namaqualand daisies in sunny spots in your garden.
For vegetable growers you can plant beetroot, carrots, dwarf spinach, endive, garlic, leek, lettuce, onion and Swiss chard.
Potato and onion cakes
As prices continue rising we’ll have to look for cheaper food alternatives. These delicious potato and onion cakes can be served with any meat dishes or roasts and are quite filling.
Ingredients
225g self-raising flour
Pinch salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard powder
100g butter
1 small onion, peeled and grated
1 large potato,peeled and grated
2 tablespoons chopped parsley
1 egg
50 g Cheddar cheese, grated
2 tablespoons milk
Vegetable oil for greasing the frying pan
Method
Sift flour, salt and mustard into a bowl and rub in the butter until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add grated onion, potato, parsley and cheese and mix to a fairly stiff dough with the egg and milk. Knead lightly on a floured surface and roll the dough. Divide into eight equal rounds. Grease a heavy frying pan and when hot cook the potato cakes for two to three minutes on each side. Serve hot.
That’s it for this week. Shop till you drop!
