Junior players entering for the interprovincial cricket tournament

Interprovincial cricket tournament will afford young cricketers an opportunity to be selected ahead of World Indoor Cricket Federation (WICF) World Cup.

The interprovincial cricket tournament has seen scores of young cricket players from across the country take part.

Southern Gauteng arena, Meyersdal Action Sports, is hosting its annual interprovincial tournament for all juniors from ages 10 to 16.

The group of young players will compete over five days as per age category.

Players will be selected to represent South Africa in the upcoming Indoor Cricket Federation World Cup.

The world cup, which will see at least nine countries participating, will take place in Australia later this year.

Coach Gary Grosskopff of Meyersdal Action Sports said this year is the first time that juniors aged 10 to 16 will compete in the tournament.

“For the last three years we have been bound by Covid-19 and the junior’s tournament has not been possible. This will determine the best players in the country and selectors will monitor their performances. From the group, a South African squad will then be considered per age category to hoist the country’s flag,” he said.

South Africa will play against India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, New Zealand and England among others.
In preparation for the tournament, the group of young players played some games and was taken through the rules of the field together with strategic planning.
