Colours galore at Holi One Fest
Colour, music, powder and dance filled the atmosphere at the Holi One Festival of Colours.
POWDER and colour clouds filled a clear blue sky on September 14 at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown as the colour fest kicked off with a bang.
Numerous artists performed live on stage including Goldfish, Crazy White Boy, DJ Fresh, Dirty Herz, The Kiffness, Speedy, Mark Stent and Royal K.
The Holi One Colour Fest has travelled all around the world and took Johannesburg by storm with thousands flocking into the square. The crowd wore white and came together to take part in music, dance, art, performance and visual stimulation.
From 15:00, every hour on the hour powder was thrown into the air, giving off a rainbow of colours and streaks blowing through the sky and above the crowd. Colours included yellow, pink, green, blue and orange.
Holi is one of the largest festivals in India announcing the arrival of spring and the passing of winter and marks the victory of good over bad. During the celebrations the caste system is out of force and so all people are equal – the symbol for that are the colours – all people are equally coloured.
The festival breathes an atmosphere of laughter and is an expression of joy with people burying the hatchet and throwing their worries to the wind. The Holi Festival of Colours, Joburg, supports one of Holi’s biggest custom of loosening the strictness of social structures and bringing communities together in an exhilarating experience.
Jozi’s community really got together as all races and sexes mingled and had a good time doing it. The fest was also very well controlled as nobody caused trouble and security was top notch. The coloured powder is environmentally friendly, non-toxic and allergen free.
Holi fest lovers can now look forward to the next fest which will take place in Cape Town on October 12.
