Boxing her way to the top

FOURWAYS - White collar boxer Shana Power from Fourways considers being physically fit to fight a blessing.

She will pack her blessing into punches when she enters the ring with Santa-Marie Venter in her debut white collar boxing bout in White Collar Boxing Fists of Fire at Scarlet Ribbon in Edenvale.

“As fighters, we are constantly a ‘work in progress’. Each one of us, our sports, our knowledge and what we learn daily pushes up towards mastery. So, in the words of Bruce Lee, ‘I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine,'” said Power.

With a Muay Thai background and her personal trainer profession, Power is confident to take on her first fight and expects to do well. “Just last year, I competed in the Cross Fit regionals and placed in the top 20.”

Power refers to herself as a ‘fitness junkie’ and said she had learned to work up a sweat and protected herself at the same time. “I cannot go a day without breaking a sweat and feeling the burn.”

She trains at Fight Fit Militia gym in Sunninghill where she was introduced to white collar boxing. Three years ago she learnt about Mixed Martial Arts and developed her love for the sport. “I decided to take up ‘the gloves’ when I saw that I was on the same level as other female fighters that came to train here and with a little encouragement from Casey ‘Lowkicks’ Thomas and Arista ‘The Tiger’ Swanepoel, here I am. I am excited to see where this path takes me.”

She thought white collar boxing would be popular among women because it uses bigger gloves and protective head gear. “They provide a sense of security, whereas Mixed Martial Arts still has that ‘blood sport’ stigma attached to it.”

It is also the females in her family who are her biggest supporters, especially her mother, aunt and sister. “Having a female fighter at Fight Fit Militia is new and exciting and I have no doubt that my whole team will be there to support me, as well as my family, friends and clients.”
