Actor brings family’s wild child to life on Mzansi Magic’s Kwa Baba
Nkanyiso Mzimela opens up about taking a creative risk with Musa Mkhize, the fun-loving troublemaker at the centre of the family chaos on Kwa Baba, set to premiere on June 1.
Every family has that one cousin who arrives at gatherings with a new girlfriend every December, the uncle who always has a wild story to tell, or the brother everyone loves, despite the chaos he leaves behind.
Those familiar family dynamics are exactly what makes Nkanyiso Mzimela’s latest role in Kwa Baba on Mzansi Magic feel so relatable. Mzimela stars as Musa Mkhize, a carefree young man whose love for fun, women, and living in the moment often puts him at the centre of drama within the family.

Describing the character, the actor laughed as he admitted that Musa is the type of guy many families know all too well. “What I can say about Musa Mkhize is that he’s a young guy, classy guy. He just wants to have fun with his friends and he loves girls.”
Mzimela joked that Musa has a lot of baby mamas and tends to avoid responsibility, making him both entertaining and frustrating to those around him. Beneath the humour and reckless behaviour, however, lies something many viewers may recognise from their own homes: The complicated but loving relationships that exist within families.
Mzimela said several scenes on the show reminded him of moments from his own upbringing, especially the interactions between Musa, MaMbokazi, Khethiwe, and the older brother, Zwelakhe. While Musa is busy chasing enjoyment, Zwelakhe is portrayed as the serious older sibling, focused on taking the family trucking business to greater heights, creating a contrast many households can relate to. “We have this family dynamic whereby the relationship we have at home sort of reminds me of some of the times and moments that I’ve had with my family.”
For Mzimela, being part of the show has also pushed him creatively. He described the role as a challenge, because Musa is very different from characters he has played before, requiring him to fully commit to the role over a long-running telenovela storyline. “Every day for me on set is a challenge because I’ve taken a risk with Musa. When you take a risk with a character on a telenovela, you need to be able to back it up nine months later, ten months later.”

Although he admits he and Musa are not entirely alike, Mzimela said there are a few similarities between them, mainly their shared love for enjoying life. “Musa just wants to have a fun time and he loves a good time, especially if the good time includes women and alcohol. So, maybe I can say we have that in common.”
The show will air on the small screen starting June 1 on Mzansi Magic.
