A race for the earth

DIEPSLOOT - He spends his year driving fast cars. She saves the planet by planting one tree at a time.

Together they can plant 32 trees in an hour, while giving a talk on the importance of trees in absorbing carbon dioxide.

Kyalami resident, Gennaro Bonafede and Miss Earth South Africa 2012 Tamerin Jardine, teamed up at Musenga Vhadzimu Primary School in Diepsloot for a special tree planting on the eve of Jardine giving up her crown.

Though love has blossomed between the two, they are also taking the importance of natural heritage to heart. The 32 trees planted are significant as it is Bonafede’s racing number.

At the school they asked the Grade 7s to help plant the trees, the first of which was an olive tree.

“Olive trees are the longest living trees,” Bonafede told the class.

Motorsport South Africa joined the two in their greening escapade and preached the importance of motorsport being part of environmental solutions.

This included discouraging non-sanctioned events, including eco-friendly technology and upholding the environmental code at all times during sporting events.
