Potjiekos cook off for Layla

PINESLOPES - Raising Hope for Layla, in association with Hirsch’s, hosted a potjiekos cook off to raise funds for little Layla O’Neill at Hirsch’s store in Fourways

O’Neill is a four-year-old Lonehill resident who suffers from Ependymoma, a rare and life-threatening disease that affects the nervous system. In order for her to receive the proton therapy treatment she needs from the MD Anderson Cancer Centre in Texas her family will have to raise a minimum of R2.3 million.

Lesley-Ann Oates, public relations officer for Hirsch’s Fourways, explained that when Hirsch’s heard O’Neill’s story it tugged at their heart strings and they immediately knew they wanted to help.

Hirsch’s Fourways contacted some of their suppliers and organised a charity potjiekos cook-off.

Once the potjies were cooked Hirsch’s customers could purchase portions of the delectable dishes, with all money raised going towards Raising Hope for Layla, a fund that has been set up to raise money for the girl.

However Oates said that donations were also welcome on the day.

She said, “Customers have been so forthcoming. We started receiving donations before we even started making the potjies!”

Belinda Lombard, a spokesperson for Raising Hope for Layla said, “We are so fortunate. The community has been incredible. I’ve received so many phone calls and emails from people offering donations and support for Layla. We’re very hopeful that Layla will receive the treatment she needs.”
