Run cancer out of town

BRYANSTON - Fathers, sons, uncles and grandpas took to the street in aid of cancer.

Hundreds of men wearing bright red speedos gathered at St Stithians College for the fifth annual DAREdevil Run.

The run in aid of cancer has become a highlight on the calendar and has grown bigger every year. This year participants had to run about 5km along William Nicol Drive in peak hour traffic and back to the college.

DAREdevil ambassador Susan Ford said the event which had taken place for the past five years was aimed at creating awareness about the early detection of testicular and prostate cancer.

Each participant paid R100 entrance fee and was given a red speedo. The proceeds of the day went to various cancer organisations.

Ford said, “It is nice to see fathers and sons doing the race together as it is not only older men at rick of cancer, boys can also get testicular cancer. Therefore we encourage male teens to do monthly self-examinations.”

Males from the age of 15 to 38 years old are most at risk of testicular cancer and men over 50 are mainly at risk of prostate cancer.

The run is also held in Grahamstown, Richards Bay, Midlands, George, Cape Town, Pretoria and Durban.
