Reaching out to wildlife
PAULSHOF - Wildlife rehabilitation centre, FreeMe, which is based in Paulshof received a very special donation from The School of Achievement.
The School of Achievement is a special needs school, based in Germiston which caters for pupils with Asperger syndrome and other learning disabilities.
The donation formed part of the school’s outreach programme. Madeleen Engelbrecht, a counsellor at the school said each term the school encouraged pupils to give to charity.
Engelbrecht did an online search for wildlife rehabilitation centres because she felt that this would be a worthy cause to donate to and found FreeMe.
“Our pupils are very special in that they need to see things visually to understand it so a wildlife rehabilitation centre was the perfect beneficiary for this programme,” she explained.
The pupils donated much needed items to the rehabilitation centre such as bird food, blankets and towels. In return Peggy-Anne Mist of FreeMe gave the pupils a detailed talk about the rescue cases that the centre handles as well as the exciting releases that they do.
“The pupils just loved the talk,” Engelbrecht said. “They were so interested and very eager to tell stories about their encounters with wildlife.”
