Dancers head to LA

WATERFALL - Dancers from Studio Seven gym in Waterfall Estate have been chosen to represent South Africa for 2014.

Dance coach Corlanie Botha assembled a team of young dancers from around Midrand, Fourways and Sandton. These are Jade Lavarone, Katelyn Gouvias, Naazneem Mayet, Alec Hogewind, Leon Greyling, Lee-Anne Crossley, Diache Lategan, Kayla Hogewind, Bianca Fourie, Mieke Greyling and Larisa Botha.

The team participated in the South African Championships of the Performing Arts, and after a week of intense dancing where they competed against 6 000 other contestants, they walked away with three silver and three gold medals.

They also qualified to represent the country at the World Championship in Los Angeles.

The dancers train two to three times a week for up to three hours per session, and even train on Saturdays from 12 until 6 pm.

Jade’s mom Irene Lavarone said that when the results were announced she stopped breathing for a moment. “We [the parents] all burst into tears and the children ran up to the stage,” she said. “We could all see the pride and happiness in the children’s eyes. It’s a big honour and an awesome success to win gold at the SA championships.”

Although the dancers have been selected to attend the World Championships their participation will be dependent on the team’s ability to raise funds through donations, sponsorship, loans and fundraising initiatives.
