Protecting and loving babies in need

LANSERIA - With close to 200 babies abandoned every month in Johannesburg, El Roi Baby Home has given some orphans a place of safety.

The home is a branch of the Refilwe community project, dedicated to loving and protecting abandoned babies while connecting them with loving families who will add value to their lives.

Established in 2012, the home receives help from a number of community volunteers who assist in meeting the practical, emotional and physical needs of the babies.

The home’s project manager, Nicole Gillette said, “The baby home is a place of safety for children who have been abandoned or whose parents have consented for them to be adopted. We’re a temporary place of safety, and all our children are on the road to adoption.

“So we pick up the babies, get them healthy, and work with a company named Abba adoptions who assign suitable families for the children.”

The volunteers dedicate their time to giving the babies a loving atmosphere. The infants are offered a productive environment in which they are able to develop a balanced life, and are given certain basic social and learning kills which prepare them for pre-school.

“I think every baby deserves to be loved,” said Gillette. “Children who have been abandoned, whose parents were unable to care for them for whatever reason, deserve an institution or a house where they can feel loved and wanted.”
