Lunch is on the cards

MIDRAND - A company is offering parents the alternative to giving schoolchildren cash for lunch.

Cliff Berner, sales and marketing director of Sunninghill-based company, LunchCard said the concept had taken off well at most Midrand school tuck shops.

“We first introduced the lunch cards to pupils at Sagewood College,” he said. “The lunch card is a cashless system created specifically for schools. Parents’ concern has always been what the lunch money they give their children is used for.

“Using the lunch card helps parents know for sure that children do not use cash at school or to use cash for drugs. Parents can closely monitor and manage the way the card is used,” Berner said.

He said some of the positives about the cashless system were that parents were able to limit the amount spent to R20 per day, and parents could pull a report of the type of food their children were buying to see if they were buying healthy food.

Berner added, “A favourite option is that parents can load a meal planner for their smaller children who can not decide on what foods to eat every day.”
Ingrid Meyer, a teacher at Sagewood College told Midrand Reporter that the Lunchcard had been a hit at the school. “It is a sure way to make certain that pupils spend money in a responsible way,” she said.

Sagewood pupils, Mthabisi Mtshweni and Elelwani Hlaka said they owned lunch cards. Mtshweni said, “The lunch card allows me to buy without having to carry money around.”

Hlaka said her lunch card was safer to carry than cash. “I do not have to worry that someone will steal my lunch money at school, I am safer using a card.”
