How to for women’s club at Hirsch’s
PINESLOPES - Hirsch's Homestore in Pineslopes hosted the International Woman's Club of Johannesburg for an exciting talk and cooking demonstration.
Lesley-Ann Oates of Hirsch’s Fourways explained that the idea for the talk came after a customer approached Margaret Hirsch, chief operations officer of the Hirsch brand. The customer told Hirsch that she enjoyed cooking and wanted to buy more appliances, but didn’t know what most of them did or how to use them. Hirsch’s approached the International Women’s Club with the view of teaching the members about new products and how to use them.
The International Women’s Club started in 1967 as the American Women’s Club. Club president, Felicity Brandt explained that the club was originally created to provide the wives of American ex-patriots in South Africa with a social circle.
Brandt, who is the club’s first South African president said in 2004 the club changed its direction and its name to become The International Women’s Club. “According to our constitution there cannot be more than one third of a particular nationality in the club,” Brandt said. “We have British, South African, Indian and Eastern European members in the club among other nationalities.” The club meets once a month at the Bryanston Country Club where they have an informative talk.
They also get together for travel, lunch and cooking groups. “It’s really a friendship club and a good support system,” Brandt said.
At the demonstration, the women listened to chefs Gerrit Jacobs and James Baker explain how to use new microwave ovens and air fryers, and watched demonstrations on how to make the perfect cup of coffee, delicious lemonade and smoothies.
