Be aware for your personal security

DOUGLASDALE - According to vice chairperson of Sector 4 Douglasdale Community Police Forum, Willem Hazewindus, the community needs to take more responsibility with their personal security.

Following a security meeting which was held by police and the forum in Lonehill, Hazewindus has made it his duty to educate the public with regards to crime prevention.

Hazewindus added, “The onus is upon us.” He said the greater community is urged to be aware of their surroundings and it should not be assumed that they are safe in big mansions and “fancy” cars. He stressed that safety precautions need to be taken seriously.

The most common reported crimes at the Douglasdale Police Station are smash and grabs. According to Hazewindus, smash and grabs are caused by negligence and irresponsibility.

“The most common issue is drivers and passengers are on their cellphones while driving,” said Hazewindus. “Handbags have been placed on seats. If the community does not change their ways, the crime rate will not reduce. There are necessary steps we need to take to ensure our safety and belongings are not at risk at robots or at shopping malls,” said Hazewindus.

He offered the following tips:

  •  Ensure cars are locked when parked at a shopping mall or when parked at a robot.
  •  All windows must be closed.
  •  Bags, electronics and personal items need to be hidden or placed in the boot of the car.
  •  Be aware of the surroundings; are there any people following or watching you?
  •  Do not attract attention to your car or yourself.
  •  Are there any security guards or car guards around when parked?
  •  Do not leave money visible in the car when parked or at a robot.
  •  Surrender goods when faced with a smash and grab, give up your items; lives are valuable, not objects.
