Pupils in their crowning glory

FOURWAYS - Kyle Horsfall (17) and Callan Gibbon (16) were crowned Mr and Miss Fourways High respectively on 14 August.

The winners said they were excited and shocked at the results. Gibbon said, “I was really surprised [as] I didn’t expect to win, maybe a runner up but not the overall winner.” The pageant winners took part in a couples’ walk, an individual walk and danced their way to victory.

Horsfall, the school’s avid sportsman, was also taken aback by the results. “I was convinced I didn’t do well in the dancing segment of the pageant,” he said.

Both Gibbon and Horsfall added that the titles have changed the way other pupils treat them, in a positive way. They said they are now seen as ambassadors of the school, as they are encouraged to set a good example for the other pupils.

Gibbon exclaimed she loved to dance and wants to pursue a career in the arts when she leaves school. She added, “Being crowned Miss Fourways has proved to me, and others, that you do not have to be the prettiest or the most popular girl in school to win.”

Horsfall anticipated the event for weeks and practised his dancing; he added that the pageant has allowed him to make new friends he would have never met before. “It is my last year to compete and it was a complete success, I will remember it when I leave school and I will miss the new friends I have made.” Horsfall added he hopes to have a career in engineering and wants to study at the University of Pretoria.

Gibbon added she would enter the pageant again next year in the hopes of maintaining her title as Miss Fourways High.

Junior winners Brody Sims (15) and Sabrina Morreno (13) were also crowned in the pageant in their segments. Sims, dubbed the school’s ‘Mr Sexy’, was not surprised he had won in his category. “I knew I would win, I worked hard during practises for the pageant, and I have made many new friends.”

Morreno believed she won because of her personality and charisma.
