Bierfest is lager than life

MONTECASINO - Guests experienced authentic Bavarian fare at the Tops at Spar Bierfest at Montecasino.

The Montecasino outdoor events area was transformed into a 4 000-seater Brauhaus which housed a live entertainment stage, platter upon platter of sumptuous German food and ice-cold beer.

Founding partner of the festival, South African Breweries called upon their master brewers to craft three special, limited edition Bavarian-styled ‘biers’ just for Bierfest. These were the ever-popular Royal Bavaria Oktoberfest Bier, the traditional Krystal Weiss Protea Edelweiss and the speciality dark ale, the King Ludwig Munich Dunkel. However, there was also a good selection of local favourites on the menu as well as wines and spirits for non-beer drinkers. Bierfest is modelled on a 204-year-old tradition that began in Munich, Germany. History has it that when Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810, he invited the entire city of Munich to what eventually became the world’s biggest after-party.

This year Bierfest is so big that it is taking place over two weekends. Those who missed out on the weekend of 17 to 19 October can still take part in the festivities from 24 to 26 October.
