Sunflower and Moths ride for registry
MONTECASINO - The Sunflower Fund, in partnership with the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (Moth) Motorcycle Association, hosted their second annual Bikers4Bandanas ride.
Moth is an association for military veterans which aims to help fellow comrades in need, either financially or physically and to remember all servicemen. The Sunflower Fund are also known as the Friends of the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) and aim to widen the bone marrow registry’s database thereby serving more people suffering from life-threatening illnesses. The Bikers4Bandanas ride started at four different meeting points around Johannesburg and ended at the Tops at Spar Bierfest held at Montecasino.
Bikers4Bandanas is an initiative which was started by The Sunflower Fund and Moth Motorcycle Association last year to help raise funds, which are used to create awareness and educate the public, and recruit potential bone marrow stem cell donors onto the bone marrow registry.
The 2014 Bikers4Bandana was well attended with more than 300 bikers. Over the years, The Sunflower Fund with the support of organisations like Moth has been able to increase the donor numbers on the SABMR from 1200 in 1999 to more than 67 000 this year. Since 2003, the fund has also spent over R4 million on tissue type testing throughout South Africa to help find donor matches for patients suffering from leukaemia and other blood diseases.
