Bikinis and pups keep Ark afloat
BROADACRES - With beautiful girls, hunky guys and cute puppies, Ark Animal Centre's annual bikini carwash had something for everyone.
Ark Animal Centre is based in Chartwell and is the leading care facility for pregnant mother dogs and puppies. They have also just opened a welfare clinic to offer veterinary assistance to disadvantaged communities.
Ark Animal Centre runs adoption weekends where members of the public can visit the shelter, play with the dogs and puppies and hopefully take one or two home. The shelter is making the experience even better with the addition of a cafe called #Smoothies and the construction of a dog walk park on the property. Ark is also building a duck pond at the shelter where they will house a flock of rescue ducks with disabilities from waterways around Fourways. In order for Ark to continue their animal rescue and rehabilitation endeavours, they rely on donations from the public as well as a number of fundraising events throughout the year. The bikini carwash is one of Ark’s most popular events and this year was no exception. Vehicles queued around the block at Outer Limits restaurant in Broadacres to get their cars washed by a host of gorgeous washers. Usually wiling away the hours at the carwash can be tedious, but at Ark’s carwash, vehicle owners and their families got the chance to play with all the adorable puppies Ark had brought along on the day. A number of carwash customers actually decided to adopt a puppy or two on the day.
Candice Eilertsen of the shelter said their original goal was to raise R15 000 at the carwash, but by the end of the day, despite the huge turnout for the event, only R4 000 had been raised. Eilertsen was not discouraged by the amount raised and said, “This fundraiser is always more about the publicity and awareness for the shelter than anything else, and this we got 150 percent right.”
