Potholes to be resurfaced in the near future
BARBEQUE DOWNS - The South African Road Agency is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance and resurfacing of Main, Nanyuki and Malindi roads in Barbeque Downs, which have been pitted with potholes for years.
According to Candice James, chairperson of Barbeque Downs Community and resident, these roads have been a problem for eight years as reported in the online story Warning: potholes.
She said Malindi Road specifically is a busy thoroughfare that connects the R55 to the Rivonia Road intersection.
Many residents of Sunninghill and Barbeque Downs avoid using this road due to the increasing amount of cars and heavy vehicles that use the route.
James said, “Malindi Road is a farm road, it is as old as the area itself. However, since then parts of the road have disintegrated and large potholes have reappeared. Motorists have been forced to drive into oncoming traffic to avoid their cars being damaged from the practically meteor-sized potholes.
Over the years, James and her team have tried to get quick and fast responses to fix the roads which was mostly caused by torrential downpours and heavy motor vehicles. Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe said, “They [community members] are trying their best to lodge complaints with the Johannesburg Roads Agency regarding these roads and I understand the residents’ frustrations, however the response is slow.”
It is now apparent that some of these inside or smaller roads like Main, Nanyuki and Malindi roads are not in-fact under the agency’s jurisdiction and fall under the provinces area.
According to media liaison officer for province Sipho Tshabalala, Main, Nanyuki and Malindi roads will be resurfaced in the near future.
However, James stated if there is not any progress, a petition will be drawn up to get these roads fixed.
