Building the nation, one bucket at a time

DIEPSLOOT - Akani Metmar School, located on the outskirts of Diepsloot, was supplied 540 buckets from Rand Merchant Bank (RBM) volunteers.

The buckets coined ‘hug buckets’ were distributed to pupils at the school on 5 December. Employee volunteers from various floors at RMB were each given a shopping list consisting of stationary and gender-specific toys that each child could utilise over the upcoming year. Aftercare teachers were also given toiletries by RBM members.

The school was founded as part of an outreach programme by the church with an aim to nurture young minds on both a spiritual and mental level. The school also ensures that children are provided with meals from Monday to Saturday. Aftercare facilities have been put in place to assist children with homework and other comprehensive programmes and extra mural activities like drama, choir, dance and exercise encourage pupils to be involved in activities that promote positive participation.

Aldene Harris an employee at RMB volunteers is an aftercare teacher on Saturdays at the school. Principal Doreen Kekana of Akani Metmar School said that Harris is like the grandmother of Akani. Harris said, “None of this would be possible without the help of RMB, who have an on-going relationship with the school. As part of their attempt to pour back into the community, RBM has given 80 families in various townships food parcels that were distributed by animal welfare Claw who works closely with these families in their quest to bring quality healthcare to animals in these townships.
